Born Jessica Arellano on December 20, 1982, in Portland, Oregon, and raised in Hemet, California, Jessy was influenced by her Mexican-American heritage and a family that encouraged her musical pursuits from an early age. By the age of four, she was playing the piano, and by fifteen, she had won the State Piano Championship at the Béla Bartók Festival. Jessy eventually pursued jazz studies at the University of Southern California (USC), where she earned a degree and was named the "Most Outstanding Jazz Student."
