Mike Smith

Mike Smith, a native of Chicago, has spent over four decades establishing himself as one of the most prolific and respected jazz saxophonists in the world. From a young age, he was captivated by jazz, and by his early twenties, he had earned the prestigious Charlie Parker Scholarship to study at North Texas State University, where he trained under the renowned saxophone professor Jim Riggs. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, Mike toured with the bands of Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich, two icons of the jazz world. However, it was his role as lead altoist and music contractor for Frank Sinatra that solidified his place in jazz history. For over 30 years, Mike performed with both Frank Sinatra and Frank Sinatra Jr., participating in worldwide tours, TV shows, and recordings, and performing at prestigious events such as the Princess Grace Foundation gala in Monte Carlo.

Collaborations and Awards
Throughout his illustrious career, Mike has performed and recorded with over a hundred jazz legends, including Tony Bennett, Nat Adderley, and Art Farmer. He was the featured alto saxophonist on Harry Connick Jr.’s Come By Me album and is celebrated for his long-standing residency at Andy’s Jazz Club in Chicago, where he has played for over 39 years. His career is decorated with accolades, such as the Cannonball Adderley Award for Outstanding Alto Saxophonist in Jazz and a National Endowment for the Arts award. He has led his quintet in opening the Chicago Jazz Festival and has toured internationally, sharing his talent and passion for jazz with audiences across the globe.

Beyond his accomplishments, Mike is widely known for his humility, kindness, and generosity as a mentor to aspiring saxophonists. Whether on stage or in the classroom, he strives to help others develop their unique voice and carries a strong sense of responsibility to preserve and pass down the traditions of jazz. His dedication to music is matched only by his dedication to people, and he consistently seeks to make a positive impact on the lives of his students and peers.

Educator and Saxophone Innovator
Mike’s impact extends beyond his performance career; he is also an accomplished educator and clinician, having taught master classes at renowned institutions such as the Berklee College of Music, the University of North Texas, and the Eastman School of Music. His influence as a mentor has shaped countless saxophonists worldwide, and his genuine love for teaching is evident in his thoughtful approach to guiding young musicians. He is known for instilling confidence and creativity in his students, encouraging them to explore their individuality within the framework of jazz tradition. In 2020, Mike became a pivotal figure at JJ Babbitt as the Product Manager and Artist Relations Director, where he co-developed the Meyer Bros. Connoisseur Series mouthpieces, a significant contribution to the world of saxophone craftsmanship. Mike's passion for innovation stems from his belief that musicians should always have the tools they need to express themselves fully.

Musical Director for Tremonti Sings Sinatra
In 2021, Mike took on the role of musical director for Tremonti Sings Sinatra, an album that marries the legacy of Frank Sinatra with the talent of Grammy-winning musician Mark Tremonti. The project, dedicated to raising funds for the National Down Syndrome Society, features surviving members of Sinatra’s band and showcases Tremonti’s tribute to Ol’ Blue Eyes. For Mike, this project was more than a professional achievement—it was an opportunity to be part of something that aligned with his deeply held values of compassion and service. Working closely with Mark Tremonti, Mike helped bring to life a record that serves both as a musical homage to Sinatra and a heartfelt contribution to a cause that supports families facing the challenges of Down syndrome.

Mike's integrity and sense of purpose drive everything he does, and this project reflects his belief in the power of music to make a real difference in the world. He carries a strong commitment to using his platform not just for artistic expression, but also to uplift others and contribute to meaningful causes. In addition to his deep ties to the jazz world, Mike continues to shape the future of saxophone performance and design through his work with JJ Babbitt as Saxophone Product Specialist and helps to guide artist relations, where his experience and artistic vision help develop elite mouthpieces sought after by professional players worldwide.
